Historical photography: some cartes-de-visite from the Sevenoaks area

Cartes-de-Visite were popular in England from around the late 1850s to about the 1870s, although were still produced much later - into the early 1900s. They were rarely used as visiting cards, but millions were produced and there was a craze for collecting them.

Here are a few cartes produced by photographers in or around Sevenoaks, Kent. I have not doctored the scans heavily, apart from a little increase in the contrast, so what you see is very much what they are currently like.

Clicking on the relevant carte will open a larger picture in a new window (and then click on the X at the top right of the new frame to close it and return here).

* the original of this picture by Arthur Dean is a larger sized 'cabinet photograph', not a carte)
